Team Liquid Falls Short at VCT LOCK/IN Debut, Head Coach Seeks More Time

At the VCT LOCK/IN tournament, Team Secret defeated Team Liquid by 2-0, which was an unexpected result. Following the match’s conclusion, the EMEA team’s head coach remarked that his squad would need some additional playing time together to meet the expectations set for them.

Team Liquid had one of the most anticipated debuts at the VCT LOCK/IN tournament since the team had spent the offseason of 2022-2023 changing most of the lineup. This caused Team Liquid to have one of the most anticipated debuts. The EMEA team has added Igor “Redgar” Vlasov and Ayaz “nAts” Akhmetshin, both formerly of Gambit Gaming, and Saif “Sayf” Jibraeel, formerly of Guild Esports, in preparation for the 2023 Valorant competitions. Also joining the team is Saif “Sayf” Jibraeel, formerly of Guild Esports.

Because they were pitted against Team Secret, a VCT Pacific international league club that had not competed internationally since 2021, many fans and commentators predicted that Team Liquid would breeze through the event’s opening round.

Team Liquid fell flat at VCT LOCK/IN

In their debut competition on the world scene, the EMEA squad struggled to compete and fell to a defeat at the hands of Team Secret. They were obliterated on both of the maps. During a press conference held after one of Team Liquid’s matches, head coach Emil ‘eMIL’ Sandgren remarked that the lineup requires more time to come together before it can become more effective.

“You need to give [the squad] some time to get good because we have so many different playstyles, combining some teams, communication, culture, and all of that other stuff,” eMIL said. As a result, we cannot deem it satisfactory until some more time passes. Dom “souls” Sulcas, a member of Team Liquid, disclosed that the squad has been experiencing difficulties obtaining visas and that these difficulties have caused the team’s practice to be subpar. On the other hand, Soulcas stated that he did not wish to make that an explanation for their bad performance.

The fans will be able to witness this Liquid roster again at the beginning of the VCT EMEA international league. Until then, they will have to wait. Team Secret will compete again at the VCT LOCK/IN on February 25 after advancing to the second round.
