Activision Takes Action Against Cheaters: 14,000 Accounts Deactivated in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Warzone 2
Because of widespread hacking and cheating in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II and Warzone 2, Activision had to deactivate roughly 14,000 accounts. In 2021, to take the fight directly to the hackers, Activision disseminated their ‘RICOCHET’ anti-cheat system, which had been created explicitly for that purpose. Since its inception, Call of Duty has made it its mission to root out and punish cheats. Throughout its existence, the system has experienced many changes, some of which include improving its ability to identify cheating, preventing incorrect players from inflicting damage or suffering hallucinations, and disabling hardware for users who cheat repeatedly.
Activision has not only employed the anti-cheat tool to target gamers who have violated the terms of service, but it has also attacked the source of origin of the cheat producers. In October 2022, Activision sent a charge for damages of $3 million to the leading service provided by EngineOwning. Large-scale public examples like these have shown that they greatly diminish the threat by catching cheaters and serve as a lesson for both existing hackers and those who will come. In the most recent round of account suspensions, nearly 14,000 users had their accounts terminated as a direct result of the findings of their investigations into developers of hacking tools. Customers have reported that they cannot log in, and numerous sources believe that this may be tied to accounts that use well-known cheating services such as EngineOwning and InterWebz.
Why were the restrictions put into place at this time?
Activision has been hard at work prepping for the next Season 5 update, which will be released on August 2, 2023, and compatible with the core Modern Warfare II game and Warzone 2. Because of the ongoing issue around Call of Duty’s usage of hackers, the game developers have a double responsibility: they must ensure that the game’s integrity is preserved and be ready for an influx of players when the game is released.
