League of Legends’ Best Top Laners Embrace New Strategies
With setups like Evenshroud Aatrox and Redemption Urgot gaining popularity, some of League of Legends’ best top laners have turned to purchasing support items rather than everyday top lane goods. Top layers have been feeling a little left out because bot lane has received two different patches in League of Legends Season 13 that have significantly altered the role’s equipment and relative strength in any given match (the most recent of which is patch 13.10).
ADCs and supports are prioritized both in the draft and during play, and pro play has also centered nearly entirely around bot lane in most matches. The top players in the game understand where to allocate their resources, and most other high-level players have done the same. Therefore, many of the top players have turned to purchasing support items rather than trying to craft pricey top lane bruiser things. The builds Redemption Urgot and Evenshroud Aatrox are only a couple of those that have become well-known recently.

The top layers feel left out because the most challenging scaling champion on the team and the most crucial early-game objective are in the same place at the bottom of the map. A failing bot lane can imply that even those that win lanes aggressively have little effect from their lead. Furthermore, top lane items could be more pricy. Nearly all top lane mythics have swings far beyond the 3000 gold threshold, and other things like Titanic Hydra, Sterak’s Gage, and Hullbreaker are all hanging at absurdly high pricing. Although they are powerful, it is a challenge to build enough of them before the opponent’s ADC hard scales. Top layers have changed the top lane by rethinking how they construct since there have been few changes to the position in Season 13.
The most notable instance is Urgot’s one-trick Urpog demonstrating the math in constructing Redemption on his leading champion. There is a strong reason why other high MMR players, coaches, and even professional players have approved his build and the system behind it. Top layers can use Redemption to effectively take trades by healing themselves and harming their opponents in addition to pressing sidelines and other areas of the map. Several top lane champions benefit significantly from Redemption as well, besides Urgot. This item has been used for trade and sidelining on several winners by other players.
Yorick’s one-trick slogdog has built Redemption and Imperial Mandate with great success. The activation of Urgot’s abilities also involves utilizing Redemption for its intended purposes. Additionally, by combining Mandate with Sherylda’s, Yorick’s abilities (especially those that involve his Ghouls) can trigger its passive and slow down opponents.
