Pokemon Scarlet & Violet players have found an easter egg that references a book published by Professor Sonia, a significant Sword & Shield character. The exact timing of Pokemon games is baffling because it’s frequently ambiguous if the primary entries are direct sequels to one another or stand-alone.
With Red and Blue both appearing as adults in Ultra Sun and Moon, older Pokemon characters have made cameos and even aged in more recent games. Similarly, Alola Trial Captain Mina’s younger self may be seen in Let’s Go, Pikachu, and Eevee! Another in-game reference from Generation 9 suggests that Pokemon Scarlet & Violet happens after Sword & Shield.

One of Professor Sonia’s works is available for reading in the library of Naranja Academy, as Japanese Pokemon Scarlet & Violet players have discovered.
“We made for the town of Stow-on-Side, which sits tucked away in the mountain, to study an ancient mural painted upon a wall of rock,” the entry said when translated. However, a Copperajah onslaught damaged our preparations and the mural itself. The book continues, “Yet what should we find behind the mural but a pair of Pokemon sculptures, one carrying a sword and the other a shield! Our preconceived notions about the legendary hero were challenged by these statues, which were older than any other artifact found to date.
A plot development from Pokemon Sword & Shield is described in the book. Bede provokes Chairman Rose’s Copperajah into defacing the mural in Stow-on-Side out of rage. A hidden statue of the cover Pokemon Zacian and Zamazenta is revealed as the painting crumbles. Pokemon players are wondering about the timing in light of this discovery. One fan asked, “Does that mean SV is in chronological order after Sword and Shield?”
Another response speculated on the setting of Scarlet and Violet: “Sonia, perhaps? What seems like a few years after Sword & Shield occurs in Scarlet & Violet? Indeed, it would be reasonable to believe Scarlet & Violet takes place after the events of Sword & Shield if they are mentioned.
