Pokemon Go Trainer Alleges Hacker Holding Account for Ransom and Niantic Refuses to Assist

A Pokemon Go trainer has resorted to Reddit with allegations that his account is being held for ransom by a hacker and that Niantic is refusing to assist him in regaining access to it. Due to the ever-increasing use of the internet, an ever-increasing number of malicious actors have discovered means by which they could take control of any one of your accounts.

This includes setting them up with a Pokemon Go account, as it’s possible that they’ll desire a way to communicate with other players outside of the confines of the game itself. Also, this has been brought to the attention of one Reddit user who claims that a hacker is holding their account hostage and that Niantic is not assisting them in regaining access to it.

The trainer of Pokemon Go says that an attacker is keeping their account hostage

This message was posted on the Pokemon Go subreddit on March 2, 2023. A communication between Neither-neck8316 and the suspected hacker was captured on screen and released by Neither-neck8316. The chats reveal that the hacker asked for 0.0068 bitcoin to be paid in exchange for the account’s owner regaining access to their account.

At the time of this writing, the amount of bitcoin was worth approximately $151 US Dollars. Therefore that amount of cryptocurrency would be equal to that amount. In a different post that was only a day earlier, the Reddit user mentioned that they had sought out the Niantic support team for assistance, but every response they’ve received indicates that the account no longer exists.

But, other players of Pokemon Go have offered their time to try to figure out who the hacker is in order to track them down utilizing the cryptocurrency payment as a means of doing so.

“Please let me know the address to which he wants you to send the bitcoins. Via the use of the blockchain explorer, it is possible to monitor transactions. One user commented, “If he doesn’t know what he is doing, it would be possible to determine his genuine identity using this method at absolutely no further risk to you.” At the time of this writing, however, there has yet to be any new information regarding the matter or whether the player has been successful in regaining access to their account.
