An insider in the industry claims that production on an undisclosed real-time strategy game based on the Star Wars franchise has begun at a “big-name” studio. Because LucasArts experimented with real-time strategy games on multiple occasions during the late 1990s and early 2000s, the Star Wars universe is no stranger to RTS experiences.
However, those adventures were far removed from securing the deal quite like Empire at War did in 2006 when Petroglyph released it. This video game allowed players to control the Empire or the Rebel Alliance. Because the studio’s previous attempts to sell sequels to Electronic Arts were unsuccessful, mods for Empire at War were the only new Star Wars-branded real-time strategy content released in recent years. However, this significant aspect may shift in the near future.
A “big-name” developer is working on a real-time strategy game based on Star Wars
VGC editor Andy Robinson responded to a tweet from GamesRadar’s Joe West, who expressed his desire for a sequel to Empire at War, by writing: “I imagine you won’t have to wait much longer for a Star Wars real-time strategy game from a big-name developer…” Robinson mentioned in a subsequent article that the project he refers to had yet to be publicly available. This suggests that the Star Wars-themed strategy game that was initially teased about being a collaboration between Respawn and Bit Reactor is one of many currently in development.
Since the agreement that gave Electronic Arts (EA) exclusive rights to develop Star Wars video games is ending, the “big-name” developer in question could be any of several AAA studios. The fact that Lucasfilm Games has already signed a contract with Ubisoft Massive for an open-world Star Wars adventure demonstrates that the company is not afraid to go for the home run.
Although the preceding information should be taken with a grain of salt, it would appear that Star Wars fans can now add a real-time strategy game to the list of upcoming projects for which they will have to wait patiently. The creators of Star Wars Jedi are also working on a first-person shooter that does not yet have a designated title. Thus this game should also be included on the list. Respawn is responsible for developing both of these experiences.
