NRG Esports vs NAVI Set to Clash in VCT Masters Tokyo Group Stage Opener

Riot Games has disclosed the matchups that will take place during the beginning of the group stage of the VCT Masters Tokyo event. NAVI and NRG Esports will be the featured teams in the first round of competition. Riot Games has disclosed the groups that will be used for the VCT Masters Tokyo tournament, featuring the eight low seeds competing for a prize pool of $1 million. NRG Esports, NAVI, Edward Gaming, and T1 comprise Group A, while Group B comprises DRX, FUT Esports, Evil Geniuses, and Attacking Soul Esport.

LOUD, Fnatic, Team Liquid, and Paper Rex are the top-seeded teams from the three international Valorant leagues. These teams have already qualified for the playoffs and will not compete in the group stage. As the winning region of the VCT LOCK//IN, EMEA possesses the most seeded teams overall. In addition, Riot disclosed the timetable and the bracket for the group stage of the competition.

An intense group-stage matchup between NRG and NAVI is scheduled for the VCT Masters in Tokyo

The first match of the first day of games will be between Evil Geniuses and FUT Esports. Two matchups will follow, featuring South Korean teams and Chinese sides (Attacking Soul Esports will face DRX, and T1 will face EDG). However, the match between NAVI and NRG will almost certainly be the most anticipated bout of the opening round.

Both teams are veterans of previous international Valorant tournaments, and the players have earlier interactions. In 2022, NRG sniper Ardis ‘radius’ Svarenieks competed on FunPlus Phoenix alongside four of NAVI’s players. With that squad, FPX was able to win Masters Copenhagen and qualify for every international event that took place in 2022.

As members of OpTic Gaming, the core of NRG, which consists of Pujan “FNS” Mehta, Austin “crashes” Roberts, and Victor “Victor” Wong, competed in every international event that year. However, they did not compete against Ardiis and his previous colleagues more than once. In the lower final of Masters Copenhagen, FPX defeated OpTic Gaming 3-1, thus eliminating them from contention for the championship. On June 12, the second meeting of Group A will take place, and it will be a battle between NAVI and NRG to determine who will advance to the top bracket of Group A to compete for the No. 1 spot. The top two teams from each group will go to the next round of the playoffs, single elimination.
