Following the dissolution of their joint venture with Pokemon Go creators Niantic, The Silph Road has announced that their website will be shut down. Pokemon Go players immediately established the Silph Road, one of the most significant communities for the mobile game, after it was released in 2016.
In 2022, Niantic and The Silph Road had a partnership that allowed the website to survive without including many advertisements. However, TSR announced on May 12, 2023, that they were closing its doors due to Niantic terminating their joint venture.
The Silph Road makes its impending closure known
In a post on their subreddit, one of The Silph Road’s proprietors announced the decision to shut down the business. “We will always be appreciative of Niantic’s assistance this year. However, they added, “All beautiful things must end. The Silph Road’s sponsorship by Niantic has been over.
“Our team has come to the bittersweet conclusion that it is time to close what has been an advantageous and memorable chapter of our lives,” the statement reads. “After considering the mounting financial constraints facing our team, along with the momentum and landscape of the game in 2023.” The schedule for the upcoming closure was then shared, showing that all save The Silph Road’s subreddit will be shut down on or before August 1, 2023.
Niantic discloses modifications to the Ambassador program
Niantic expressed gratitude to The Silph Road in a Pokemon Go blog post before announcing that the Community Ambassador program would be made available to anyone outside of TSR. “While we are closing applications for May during the transition, community leaders will have expanded opportunities to apply to be a Community Ambassador outside of The Silph Road,” they stated.
Trainers worldwide will soon have the opportunity to apply to this updated program through Campfire, offering opportunities to share and expand their community and earn prizes for getting together in person to play. We’ll keep adding more options to the program, like giving Community Ambassadors and their fellow Trainers special access and benefits. At the time of writing, it is still being determined what those opportunities include, but we’ll keep you informed as Niantic makes more information available. This comes shortly after gamers started to stop playing the game because Niantic raised the cost of Remote Raid passes and other problems with the game.
