Pokemon Trading Card Boom: A Binder’s Surprising Appraisal on Antiques Roadshow

A collector of Pokemon trading cards presented her complete binder to Antiques Roadshow, which appraised for almost $10,000. In recent years, Pokemon trading cards have seen a significant value boost, scarce ones still in mint condition. Despite this, there has been an increase in thefts worldwide as a direct result of the increased value. For instance, in March of 2023, one band of robbers stole more than one million dollars worth of Pokemon trading cards and other memorabilia.

The estimated value of one Pokemon fan’s collection took her by surprise, even though it did not reach six figures. It turned out that the estimate was far higher than the sum of $35 that her mother paid for it.

Pokemon card collection gets assessed on Antiques Roadshow

A segment from the show Antiques Roadshow, which airs on PBS, has been uploaded to the show’s official channel on YouTube. A visitor to the series brought 150 cards in a binder with them, some of which were rare copies of Shadowless cards and others from the Base Set. Because the trading cards from the 1990s were still in pristine condition, their value shot through the roof. According to the host, Travis Landry, the most conservative estimate for the value of your binder at auction is $5,000 to $10,000. Landry proposed that the owner sell the cards individually, such as the replicas of Mewtwo and Charizard, to increase the amount of money earned.

After that, Landry referred to the Pokemon market as “volatile.” “It is a market that blossomed through the pandemic,” he stated. “It is a market that blossomed.” “I’m sorry to be the one to deliver the bad news on the flip side, but your Charizard in this condition a little over a year ago was likely worth $5,000 to $8,000 in the trading card game. During the most active period of the market, which lasted from November 2020 to April 2021, we saw prices for this card go as high as $15,000.

Heritage Auctions just concluded the sale of a PSA-graded Trophy Pikachu for the staggering price of $300,000. PSA claims that The Pokemon Company printed fewer than one hundred of these cards, ensuring their value remains high. Would you ever consider parting with your priceless collection of Pokemon trading cards?
