Overwatch 2 Update Introduces Controversial Nerf: Tracer’s Visual Effects Change

One of the developers working on Overwatch 2 stated in a post on Twitter that detailed a tweak to Tracer that a change to the visual effects (VFX) on her sprint makes it much easier to track the speedster at close range. In keeping with previous game iterations, Overwatch 2 simplifies quantifying both boosts and nerfs. They are typically hidden adjustments to numbers, the addition or removal of mechanics or interactions, and other items of a similar kind that can be easily tracked and reported to the user. These sorts of changes are typically made in response to player feedback.

Nerfs, on the other hand, can take the shape of subtle adjustments to the ways in which characters perform their functions. One of the developers working on Overwatch 2 disclosed that the most recent patch included a significant “quality of life” adjustment for Tracer. Even if it is merely an aesthetic adjustment to the way that her dash is interpreted by players, even the developer conceded that the update could be “divisive” among players.

Tracer’s high mobility is the only thing that ensures her continued survival. She has the lowest health pool in the game at 150 and is quite frail, but she can be very effective in the hands of a skilled player. Her health pool is the lowest in the video game.

It makes no difference how little health she has if she can’t be struck because she weaves around firefights and makes it difficult for her opponent to keep their bearings. The developers of Overwatch have noted this, and while they are pleased to see that Tracer can be successful when she is played effectively, they believe it may take a lot of work to predict what she will do next. Therefore, changes were made to Tracer’s visual effects to produce a clear and distinct trail that demonstrates precisely where she is traveling. This is unquestionably a weakening of the hero in some way.

Tracer was relatively easy to follow when viewed from a greater distance, but she was nearly impossible to follow when observed up close. Because players need to spin so swiftly and at such extreme angles, keeping her in your line of sight might be challenging. Players will still face difficulties in rotating rapidly while keeping their aim trained on Tracer, but they will have a much clearer understanding of the direction in which she is moving due to this update. This relatively minor adjustment might significantly affect the outcomes of matches.
