Infinity Ward Fires Employee Over Racist Messages: Fallout and Controversy Ensue
After racist private messages were found to have been published online and gone public, Infinity Ward terminated the employment of an employee. Since the company’s inception in 2002, Infinity Ward has contributed to the development of seven mainline Call of Duty games. Activision became interested in the development team’s work after seeing their first project, Call of Duty, in 2003. The rest, as they say, is history.
After Activision acquired Infinity Ward, the studio went on to develop legendary first-person shooter games such as Call of Duty 4, Modern Warfare 2, Modern Warfare 3, and the two most current reboots of the Modern Warfare series. In spite of the illustrious history of Infinity Ward, tensions have been running high about the present status of Call of Duty. Because an upgrade did not meet the expectations of the developers and other staff, they began receiving death threats in the month of April. This brought the level of frustration to a boiling point.
The development team found themselves under further scrutiny as a result of an employee’s racist private texts being disclosed to the public.
Infinity Ward has issued a statement regarding the firing of an employee due to the individual’s racist messages
According to a story published by CHARLIEINTEL on May 21, it was stated that “Infinity Ward has fired one of their employees after private matches shared online showed the employee sending racist messages.” The racist statements were exposed by a streamer on Twitch by the name of tianna-mercedes, who also criticized Infinity Ward for failing to take action. “That’s really funny! Your employee, who was acting in a revoltingly racist manner, then had the gall to imply that it was phony after they were discovered.
The response from Infinity Ward was as follows: “The individual in question is no longer an employee at Infinity Ward.” It is not quite obvious what the employee’s function was within the organization. COD has also lately found itself at the center of a controversy after NICKMERCS tweeted a response to a demonstration held during Pride Month. As a result of the backlash his statements caused, Call of Duty decided to remove his skin from the game. In addition, after TimTheTatman voiced his support for NICKMERCS, the creators were compelled to remove his operator bundle from the game. Concerning Activision and Infinity Ward’s handling of the most recent incident, it is not yet clear what kind of criticism will be leveled against them.
