One former NFL player earned millions selling Pokemon TCG cards months after hanging up his cleats. Football players may not seem like Pokemon enthusiasts, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Just ask Jamaal Williams, who was only too ready to reveal his preferred Pokemon species a few months back.
As a child, Blake Martinez, a former NFL linebacker, had a passion for Pokemon and recently rediscovered it. In 2023, Martinez has made a multimillion dollar business out of his passion for Pokemon.
Pokemon TCG helped a former NFL player make millions
Blake Martinez, a former player for the Green Bay Packers and New York Giants who unexpectedly retired last year but now owns his trading card firm, was recently the subject of a profile in The Athletic.
After eight seasons in the NFL, Martinez left the league at 28 in 2022, and he launched Blake’s Breaks in July of the same year. When the COVID-19 epidemic hit, the former Packer, who had grown up collecting Pokemon cards, rediscovering his love for the TCG. He has so far earned a sizable quantity of money from his new business, which consists of selling cards and streaming himself opening Pokemon TCG boxes, Yu-Gi-Oh!, and sports trading card sets.
A few months after telling CNBC that his firm had brought in over $6 million in only eight months, he told The Athletic that he had made over $11 million selling Pokemon cards. Martinez listed some of his most significant transactions, including a Pokemon Illustrator card that sold for $672,000 at auction and another that brought him $570,000 for the former NFL star. Although Martinez said he liked playing football, he appreciates that he has created something that will last for a long time and would allow him to continue “running his team.” Not every recent news in the Pokemon TCG has been noteworthy, however. A Charizard from the newly released Obsidian Flames collection, which went viral on social media, was one of the cards that The Pokemon Company showed.
