As the studio gears up for the release of OW2’s eagerly anticipated story missions, Blizzard President Mike Ybarra is making suggestions about plans for Overwatch as an IP. With Season 6’s “Invasion,” released in August, Overwatch 2 will finally release its first batch of PvE story content. This may be the beginning of some significant developments for the OW universe.
In a lengthy social media post, Ybarra detailed how the Overwatch team gave Blizzard employees an early preview of Invasion, which was positively welcomed. While expressing support for Overwatch as a franchise and addressing PvE’s axed hero missions component, the Blizzard President also asserted that the Overwatch series might expand beyond only video games.

According to Ybarra, Blizzard still has faith in the Overwatch 2 devs, even though it was decided to remove PvE features that “simply were never coming to fruition in a way that would meet player expectations.”
The Overwatch developers have insisted that it was extremely tough to construct the intended hero missions because they had been proposed years earlier with numerous new abilities for each character. “We are aware that this may disappoint players and hurt us deeply. We also understand that we can communicate more effectively. According to Ybarra, the team deliberates on these choices very seriously. He added that Overwatch’s IP is “incredible,” with the teams continually debating how to expand it and hinting at enormous future ambitions.

He continued to discuss the potential of this fantastic IP, which has enormous potential in gaming and other industries. “The potential for this IP is just getting started.” While he didn’t go into detail about what the team has in mind, a complete Overwatch anime could be a strong possibility, given the success of the brief Genesis series on YouTube. It’s interesting to note that Ybarra’s words on IP expansion resemble those he previously made on StarCraft and the potential for expanding the floundering RTS franchise. Until then, we’ll have to wait and see how the public reacts to the August 10 release of Overwatch 2 Invasion.
