Doomfist’s Block Ability in Overwatch 2: Players Discover Issues with Damage Prevention and Nerf

Following the implementation of the midseason update, an Overwatch 2 player observed that Doomfist’s block does not prevent damage from being dealt by some attacks.  As part of the transfer from Overwatch to Overwatch 2, Doomfist was reassigned to the Tank role, and with that came the addition of a new skill called Power Block. This was done in order to make the character more suitable for the Tank role by providing him with a defensive ability in place of his previous Uppercut ability. 

However, the block may not be the finest blocking ability available, as it is mentioned rather specifically that it is not immune to crowd control and that it does not block damage. This suggests that the block may not be the best blocking ability available. The amount that is taken is reduced. And with the most recent midseason patch, Doomfist’s block has become worse, as he is now vulnerable to damage from a wide variety of abilities that do not involve crowd control. 

In his testing, GetQuakedOn, who describes himself as a Doomfirst specialist and a broadcaster, wrote out an extensive list of abilities that might cause Doomfist to suffer damage while blocking.  There are skills that can be used to manipulate large groups of people, such as Rammatra’s Vortex, Orisa Javelin Spin, and Sombra’s EMP. However, he receives less damage as a result of it on average. 

However, there are a significant number of skills that do not become blocked even when they need to. While Doomfist is stopping, he takes damage from abilities such as JunkerQueen’s melee, Ana’s primary fire, Moira’s primary fire, Echo’s beam, Zarya’s primary fire, and many others on the long list. 

In Overwatch 2, the Doomfist block ability has been entirely nerfed

The fact that many of these abilities cannot be blocked, on the other hand, indicates that a crucial part of Doomfist’s gameplay has been entirely compromised.  If you reduce the damage taken by at least 100 or more while blocking with Doom, the cooldown for your Rocket Punch will be reset immediately. However, this glitch implies that you cannot reset it with your block because you will not be reducing any damage.

GetQuakedOn claims there is a workaround for the problem. The solution is to tilt one’s head slightly downward while blocking in order for it to be effective in preventing harm. Or, as he puts it, to not even bother playing Doomfist at this time.
