Analysis of Yay’s Comeback Match in the North American Challengers Competition by Sean Gares

Jaccob ‘YES’ Whiteaker returned to the professional scene with Disguised in the North American Challengers competition. However, their match against Oxygen Esports ended in a sad defeat. Sean Gares explained why he believes Yay did not perform to his potential in his first match.

On April 20, the former Cloud9 and OpTic Gaming star Valorant player Yay made his return to professional competition. He did so while playing for Disguised against Oxygen Esports in the second split of the North American Challengers League. Oxygen defeated his new team with a score of 2-0. They decisively won one map while the other went into overtime, and Oxygen mounted a comeback to win.

He only managed to record seven kills in his first map since playing with Cloud9 at VCT LOCK//IN. Meanwhile, he was responsible for 16 fatalities. Sean Gares, a former head coach for the 100 Thieves Valorant who is now a content developer, co-streamed the match and discussed why he thought yay seemed rusty in his first battle back after an extended absence. According to Gares, “I think like the timing, between these two Joshua’steel’ Nissan and Amgalan ‘Genghsta’ Nemekhbayar, and yay was missing in a lot of those hits.

Gares called attention to a couple of rounds in which, yes, playing as Jett, was placed in positions that were “unwinnable” due to a lack of synergy with the usefulness of his teammates. On the first map, Haven, Steel, and Genghsta were playing as Initiators. However, they did not appear to be drilled in the timings Yay intended to take or hit bursts onto the spike sites.

“I mean obviously yay did have some mistakes, let’s be real,” Gares added. “I mean, obviously, yay, did have some mistakes.” The former coach of Valorant also claimed that Yay could have been struggling with a lot of pressure in his comeback to professional play to earn a win for Disguised when his squad still needs to be cohesive enough to pull out a win against a quality opponent like Oxygen. Yay, ‘s team had lost to Oxygen in their previous match.

On April 27, when they face off against Shopify Rebellion, Disguised and Yay will have another opportunity to win in the NA Challengers competition.
