100 Thieves: A Rollercoaster Season in VCT 2023 Ends with Disappointment and Reflection

Following their top eight VCT LOCK//IN performance and qualification for Valorant Champions 2022, 100 Thieves had a bright season. However, their season finished in July with nothing to cheer about. Going into the 2023 VCT season, fans and commentators had great hopes for 100 Thieves. In the middle of 2022, the team’s roster underwent a significant change with a focus on young, talented players who could be shaped to fit the goals of the new general manager and coach. Brenden “Stellar” McGrath’s team earned a spot in the Valorant Champions 2022. Young sniper prodigy Matthew ‘Cryocells’ Panganiban, who was chosen over Jaccob ‘Yay‘ Whiteaker, helped 100 Thieves boost their squad for the upcoming 2023 season.

At VCT LOCK//IN, where they reached the quarterfinals before falling to the eventual winners, Fnatic, the squad showed glimpses of its promise. However, this promise was only partially realized. After losing their last game against a MIBR team with a coach. 100 Thieves could not advance to the VCT Americas playoffs and were beaten by Sentinels in the first round of the league’s LCQ competition.

Every member of 100 Thieves released a nearly similar apology after their LCQ defeat. IN A POST-MATCH INTERVIEW. Also, Stellar received supportive letters from friends and family that affected him. “I cry when my parents say they’re still proud of me. I had a hard time reading some of it,” he said. Stellar acknowledged that the loss itself wasn’t painful since he had previously experienced difficult losses. He did, however, warn that he would undoubtedly experience a surge of emotions in the days to come.

The VCT season for 100 Thieves finishes in July

The season he was moved quickly for Mikes—almost too quickly. He expressed sadness at the team’s disappointing season and acknowledged that there were several things that, as a coach, he should have picked up on sooner. Mikes remarked, “I know how brilliant these guys are, and it’s frustrating to see teams like this having difficult seasons. “The number of games will assist a lot in the next season because you struggle with that. Even though I’m pretty young, playing with newer, younger players may be challenging. And there are a few matches available for you to practice with.

For most of the VCT Americas split, Mikes, who is 24 years old, coached 100 Thieves himself. James ‘JamezIRL’ Macaulay helped him for a time, but the former Cloud9 coach quit after the first week of the season in April. Mike received assistance from OREsports coach Erik ‘vapen’ Sutton for the LCQ competition. It confirmed his belief that today’s valiant coaches need a partner to divide the job. He remarked of having a one-person coaching staff, “Never again.” “I believe there are too many things happening each week in the game, even a year and a half to two years ago, for solo coaching,” the player said.
