Drama erupted at the Dota 2 Bali Major after BetBoom’s Offlaner Pure was seen watching a Twitch feed while his team played Tundra Esports. The Bali Major for Dota 2’s upper bracket quarterfinals included an official match between BetBoom and Tundra Esports on July 5, 2023. Tundra called a break in that match to alert the competition officials about a problem.
Ivan ‘Pure’ Moskalenko, an offlaner for BetBoom, briefly alt-tabbed from his game to Aleksandr ‘Nix’ Levin’s Twitch feed while the game was suspended. The DPC regulations indicate that “players are prohibited from watching any broadcasts while competing in an official match.” This is against those rules. According to the rulebook, only Dota 2, Teamspeak, and Steam are permitted to be open simultaneously as a LAN event game.
The event disqualifies Pure from the Bali Major
The tournament administrators revealed during the pre-show on July 6 that Pure’s actions had significant repercussions because BetBoom’s 2-0 victory over Tundra was reversed. The Russian squad now plays in the lower bracket and faces elimination from the Bali Major. The defeat can also result in BetBoom losing its seat at The International 2023. Based on DPC points, the team had already qualified for the championship event with the win over Tundra. Neal ‘Tsunami’ Khandheria, the host of the Bali Major, revealed that Pure had been “disqualified, not just from the series, but for the rest of the event” moments before the match versus Azure Ray got underway.
BetBoom fell against Azure Ray 2-1 and finished in ninth to twelfth place in the Bali Major, with Roman ‘Resolut1on’ Fomynok filling in. He has competed in two TI finals. Depending on how Quest Esports and Team Aster perform, the only other teams who can enter the competition based on DPC points may still receive an invitation to TI.
Responding to the disqualification, BetBoom
BetBoom recognized that Pure had broken the tournament’s regulations in a statement shared on VK but argued that “there was no malicious intent” on the participant’s part. BetBoom pointed out that the incident occurred in the ninth minute and could not have significantly impacted the nearly two-hour game.
The Russian organization also stated that it disagreed with the harsh sentence. It has sent a formal request to Valve, which it hopes will examine the situation with “due care and provide an objective solution.”
