Blizzard Entertainment has revealed a three-part animated miniseries dubbed Genesis, which may hint at a brand-new Omnic hero. Thanks to Blizzard Entertainment’s gorgeously produced shorts, Overwatch fans have pushed the company to make a TV program or movie set in the game’s environment.
Unfortunately, aside from its character shorts, Overwatch has never seen any long-form media, that is, until recently. Genesis, a brand-new animated miniseries from Blizzard, is a prequel series focusing on the Omnic Crisis and the heroes who assisted in ending it.
There will be a three-part animated series for Overwatch
The official Overwatch Twitter account announced on June 30, 2023, noting that “it was a technological golden period.” When it wasn’t. It introduced the Overwatch miniseries GENESIS.
On July 6, 2023, at 9 AM PST, 12 PM EST, and 5 PM BST, the first installment of the three-part miniseries will debut on PlayOverwatch’s YouTube account. One of the teaser trailers is just over five minutes long, which is unfortunate for fans who hoped for longer-form content. It is a prequel to Overwatch and Overwatch 2 events, as the trailer shown footage from the Omnic Crisis. Also, we spotted Mina Liao throughout the teaser, who is one of the game’s foremost authorities on robotics and artificial intelligence. Although Liao is most known as the designer of Echo among Overwatch fans, she also played a significant role in creating Omnics.
The teaser also showed Liao producing what appeared to be a previously unseen Omnic or omnic progenitor, and it ended with this weird robot approaching the Nepal monastery while dressed in torn orange and red clothing. While this character’s attire and environment undoubtedly have similarities to the Omnic monk Zenyatta that players are accustomed to, this new Omnic is highly distinct in appearance. Though it might be a glimpse into Zenyatta’s past, this could also hint at a future Hero. Until Genesis premieres in early July, Overwatch fans will have to wait to learn more about the Omnic War and this enigmatic new robot character.
