Because the Oceanic squad had to compete and raise the money for its boot camp without support from an esports company, Bonkers had a difficult journey to VCT Pacific Ascension. The group talked about their journey in an interview. In modern esports, Oceania has all but been forgotten. There were just two teams signed to an organization for the Challengers League Oceania, and players and esports companies left the area searching for more excellent opportunities elsewhere.
However, players from Oceanic are still attempting to enter VCT Pacific. Unsigned team Bonkers is competing for recognition in the promotion event as the Challengers League Oceania representative at VCT Pacific Ascension. Regarding their chances of winning the tournament, Bonkers captain Jackson “Minimise” White said, “We’re always confident.” “Ascension has a lot of good teams, but we want nothing more than to show the world Oceania can produce tier-one talent, and we will stop sleeping on us,” said the squad from Oceania. Bonkers needed help preparing for Ascension because the team had to raise money through a crowdsourcing campaign to pay for a boot camp before the LAN competition in Bangkok, Thailand. With the help of a $1,500 gift and a shoutout from Valorant streamer Tarik “Tarik” Celik, the squad was able to meet its financing target.
“Having someone you watch so much help you out is surreal, and it feels good to have Tarik and his fans supporting us,” Minimise added.
Crazy about creating Ascension and lacking org support
During their Challengers League season, the team received zero genuine offers from esports organizations. Bonkers is the only team not supported by an organization out of the ten teams competing in the event in Bangkok. The Bonkers captain commented on being the only unsigned team at the competition: “At some point, it would be motivating, but at this point, it’s just exhausting; organizing the boot camp and travel while trying to play is hard, along with no financial stability.”
However, it’s a lot of pleasure to stand up for yourself. The support we receive is incredible, and we have a lot of leeway in how we market ourselves and use social media. Due to a lack of organizational assistance, most Bonkers’ players must balance practice and class. The team was able to dominate its Oceanic rivals in the Challengers League despite the rigorous schedule. In the second split, Bonkers defeated NerdPunt, one of the league’s signed teams, 3-0. They only lost two series overall during group and playoff play. The team’s hopes are pinned on getting promoted because Minimise claimed he has little chance of joining a couple even after Ascension.
