Blizzard President Acknowledges ‘Insane Potential’ of StarCraft IP After Twitch Broadcaster LIRIK’s Request for New Content
After a request for new content from a Twitch broadcaster named LIRIK, Blizzard President Mike Ybarra expressed interest in expanding the StarCraft intellectual property (IP), and he acknowledged that the franchise still possesses “insane potential.” Due to the unfortunate cancellation of StarCraft Ghosts and a planned first-person shooter many years ago, the StarCraft series has not received a new installment in many years and has failed to develop beyond its roots as a real-time strategy game.
According to Ybarra’s brief conversation with LIRIK, Blizzard still wants to do more with their beloved space opera brand. This is supported by the fact that the conversation took place. When LIRIK and Shroud were talking about Diablo 4’s leveling system on Twitter, the President of Blizzard responded with a GIF to their conversation. The Twitch streamer realized this was his chance to shine, so he took advantage of the situation by asking about StarCraft.
Blizzard’s head concurs with LIRIK’s assessment that they should “blow up” the StarCraft IP
Without losing time, LIRIK urged the President of Blizzard to “blow up” StarCraft intellectual property and broaden its scope beyond its roots as a real-time strategy game. The streamer added that the intellectual property is “dripping with ways to break out of RTS form.” “I like SC, but Zoomers no longer play real-time strategy games, and boomers’ APM is getting worse. However, the StarCraft universe has incredible untapped potential and remains among the very finest. It would appear that Ybarra felt the same way, as he communicated to the Twitch star that he understood what the Twitch star was saying. “I agree, it has insane potential, and it is still one of the best IPs out there,” he responded.
It is intriguing to see how the corporation views the potential of the StarCraft property, even though this does not reveal anything regarding a new StarCraft game or if Blizzard will ever take the series in a new route, such as a Netflix adaptation.
It is still being determined whether or not the Microsoft merger is affecting potential future content for StarCraft. Also, important to note that Xbox head Phil Spencer has shown interest in adapting the series for the console. Fans of the series will, one can only hope, soon have something new to sink their teeth into, and if this is any indication of what’s to come, then things are looking good.
