Sonic Superstars Unveiled: A Classic-Inspired Side-Scrolling Adventure for Sonic the Hedgehog

During the Summer Game Fest 2023 event, SEGA gave attendees their first glimpse at Sonic Superstars, a classic-inspired side-scrolling adventure featuring the video game Sonic the Hedgehog with a brand-new appearance. The success of Sonic the Hedgehog’s most recent adventure, Sonic Frontiers, and the popularity of the Sonic the Hedgehog movie have contributed to the character of Sonic the Hedgehog experiencing something of a revival.

Despite this, Sonic fans are anxious to return to the Hedgehog’s traditional 2D roots, particularly given the excellent reception that 2017’s Sonic Mania received. During Summer Game Fest 2023, SEGA has provided attendees with their first peek at Sonic Superstars. It is planned to re-create classic Sonic with a completely different artistic approach.

Incredible new gameplay for Sonic Superstars has been shown

At the beginning of the trailer for Sonic Superstars, we see Sonic playing in his traditional 16-bit manner as he races across Green Hill Zone and then goes through a rift in the screen.

Before getting into several different gameplay samples throughout the game’s numerous levels and stages, fans were given a glimpse at the new 2.5D visual style used in Sonic Superstars at this point in the presentation. We see a remastered version of the Green Hill Zone with what appears to be a remastered version of the Jungle Zone and a brand-new pixelized Zone exclusive to the Superstars version of the game.

The trailer also reveals that players could take control of three other characters besides Sonic himself. These characters include Tails, Knuckles, and even Amy Rose, who will be wearing her iconic yellow skirt and green attire from the 1980s.

After demonstrating the four characters that may be played, we can see that Superstars will also have co-op gameplay. The official website states that for the first time, Sonic fans will have the opportunity to “play through the entire campaign with up to 3 other players with drop-in and drop-out 4-Player Local Co-op.” New capabilities derived from the Chaos Emeralds are also included in Superstars. These new abilities will allow players to change their appearance, swim through waterfalls, and multiply as they progress through the game’s various stages. Fans may anticipate Sonic Superstars to be released sometime during the fall of 2023, even though we still need to set a specific release date for the game.
